Defending conference champion Highland continued its winning ways in middle school football Wednesday by a 20-6 margin over Coats-Erwin on the Vikings’ home field.
Highland improved to 2-0 on the season, following last week’s 40-0 victory over Shughart.
Coats-Erwin dropped to 1-1 after a 28-6 win at Dunn in its season opener last week.
Operating this season out of a Wing-T offense, the Vikings took the opening kickoff and put together a scoring drive in taking an 8-0 lead.
The Falcons responded with a drive of their own following the ensuing kickoff, capped by J.J. Cowan’s 30-yard touchdown run.
The Vikings scored again in the second quarter. Coats-Erwin moved deep into Highland territory, but the Viking defense stopped the drive as the first half ended with the Vikings holding a 14-6 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter Highland struck again in the fourth to take a 20-6 lead. The Falcons again drove deep into Viking territory late in the game, but the Highland defense held as time expired.
Coats-Erwin hosts Shughart on Wednesday in the Falcons’ home opener.
