Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity softball team downed visiting Fayetteville Christian, 10-0, in six innings on Wednesday as sophomore Rhyleigh Horne hit a home run and pitched a shutout.
The Eagles improved to 3-0 in the Sandhills Athletic Conference with their fourth straight win on the 10-run mercy rule. CFCA has outscored opponents, 46-2, in that span.
Horne allowed three hits and no walks while striking out five. She hit a solo homer in the third inning. She was 2-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles scored six runs in the fifth inning.
Kim Bordeaux was 3-for-4 with three runs, including the game-ending run in the sixth on a ball hit by Averi Williams that the first baseman mishandled. Williams went 2-for-4.
CFCA catcher Bekah Ennis provided a defensive highlight with a diving catch on a bunt in the first inning. She sat up and threw the baserunner out at first for a double play.
The Eagles host Freedom Christian today at 4:30 p.m.
