Host Dunn got off to a strong start and held off a West Robeson American rally to start the Dixie Youth AAA (10-and-under) state baseball tournament with a 6-4 win on Saturday.
Starter Wyatt Scott was the winning pitcher for Dunn, yielding one earned run on two hits, one walk and one hit batter, with one strikeout in one and one-third innings.
Scott was 3-for-3 with one run scored and Davis Spruill had two hits to lead Dunn at the plate.
Gavin Tyndall and Tanner Williams each had one hit and one run scored. Tres Daughtry had one hit. Harry Johnson and Alan Hinson scored one run apiece.
Dorman Lowery had two hits and Christian Locklear and Mason Brewer each had one hit and one run scored to lead West Robeson American.
Dunn started the game hot, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning on three hits, two walks and one error.
West Robeson got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Jordan Locklear scored on a base hit to center from Dakota Locklear, but a throw from Williams, in center, to Spruill, the catcher, was in time to prevent a second run from scoring and end the inning.
West Robeson scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to just one.
Dunn added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning when Scott led off with a single, advanced on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a base hit from Spruill.
West Robeson threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two out. But a pop-up to short ended the game.
Dunn faces Stanley in the second round at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. West Robeson American meets Leland National, which lost to Stanley on Saturday, in an elimination game at 12:30 Sunday.
