Lady Camels advance in WBI with 70-62 win over Tennessee Tech

BUIES CREEK — Hayley Barber posted a career-high 23 points, leading Campbell to a 70-62 Women’s Basketball Invitational quarterfinal win over Tennessee Tech Monday night at Gore Arena.

The Camels (23-12) matched a single-season school record for wins, matching the 1987-88 team, while Tennessee Tech finishes its season at 22-11.

Barber hit eight of her 10 shots on the night, including 2-of-3 three pointers, adding a 5-of-6 clip from the free throw line in the win. The junior also dished out four assists with two rebounds.

Shy Tuelle joined Barber in double figures with 13 points, knocking down 3-of-4 from distance and tacking on five assists. Caroline Bowns scored nine on three triples, while Lauren McNamara-Clement and Luana Serranho registered eight apiece.

Kentoria Alexander paced TTU with 12 points, five boards and four assists, while Anacia Wilkinson notched 11 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks. Abby Buckner also recorded 11 points with seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

With the game knotted at 57 with 5:47 to go, Serranho’s driving lay-in, followed by a Bowns three gave Campbell a 5-point cushion at 62-57 with under four minutes remaining.

With 54 seconds on the clock, Campbell held a 63-60 lead when Barber drove into the lane and dished to Bowns on the right side, who rattled home her third three of the night to put CU up six. The Golden Eagles four of their last six shots, while CU hit 4-of-6 free throws to seal the win, outscoring TTU 13-5 down the stretch.

Tennessee Tech led by as many as 10 in the first quarter, but Campbell took a 31-29 lead into the half, converting a 15-2 run from the first and into the second quarter. The lead swelled to seven with a Barber lay-up at the 6:36 mark of the third, extending the Camels’ run to 29-13.

The Golden Eagles also held an 18-0 advantage in second chance points, pulling down 13 offensive rebounds.

With the win, Campbell moves on to the WBI semifinals, traveling to Appalachian State on Saturday, March 30. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
