BUIES CREEK — After trailing by 10 with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Campbell women’s basketball outscored Hampton 23-9 for the remainder of the game to earn a 52-46 win over the first-place Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena.
Hampton’s Charlisa Jenkins knocked down a free throw at the 2:09 mark of the third quarter to give the Pirates their largest lead, 37-27. Before the end of the third period, Ashlyn Hampton scored and Caroline Bowns hit a three to trim Hampton’s lead to five going into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, both sides scored on their first possessions: HU’s Laren Vanarsdale made a layup and Hayley Barber knocked down a three; Barber’s 3-pointer cut the lead to four.
Bowns knocked down another three at the 4:37 mark to pull CU within one and then scored a layup after a Pirate turnover. Bowns’ back-to-back scores earned Campbell its first lead since 7:50 in the third quarter (23-20) and her baskets sparked a 12-2 run to close out the game.
In the game-altering fourth quarter, the Camels shot 50 percent (7-for-14), including 2-for-2 from deep, while holding Hampton to 24 percent shooting (4-for-17).
Campbell evened its Big South Conference record at 3-3, while improving its overall record to 11-6. Hampton suffered its first loss in Big South play, falling to 4-1 in conference matchups and 8-8 overall.
Barber scored a team-high nine points, including seven in the fourth quarter alone. In the final period, Barber went 2-for-3 from the floor, 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, and hit 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. She also finished the day with a season-high seven rebounds.
Bowns finished with eight points, which included two from beyond the arc, while Lauren Carter, Taya Bolden and Hampton scored seven points apiece. Luana Serranho dished out a career-high seven assists, six of which came in the second half.
Campbell outrebounded the Pirates 52-33 as two Camels pulled down double-digit boards: Hampton (11) and Bolden (10).
Hampton’s Ashley Bates (15), Kaylah Lupoe (12) and Vanarsdale (12) scored 39 of the Pirates’ 46 points. The Pirate bench scored just one point, while the Camel bench totaled 19 points.
The Campbell defense allowed Hampton to shoot just 30 percent, the Pirates’ lowest shooting performance in Big South play this season; 46 points was also the lowest point total for HU in conference play.
Campbell also held the advantage in points in the paint (24-22) and second chance points (13-5).
Up next, the Camels will travel to High Point on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. Next Saturday, CU hosts Radford at 2 p.m.
