BUIES CREEK — Shy Tuelle’s 3-point shot with 25 seconds to go completed a 52-51 Big South Conference women’s basketball comeback win for Campbell over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at Gore Arena.

Campbell (16-9, 8-6 Big South) trailed 45-36 with 7:43 to play after CSU (9-16, 6-8 Big South) registered a 21-6 third quarter run. The Buccaneers outscored the Camels 21-13 in the third frame, blocking eight CU shots in the quarter alone.

After Campbell led 30-24 at the 8:33 mark of the third, CSU limited the Camels to one field goal in the remainder of the quarter, a Caroline Bowns three with 2:16 on the clock. CSU took a 43-34 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Tierra Steede’s lay-in gave Charleston Southern a 45-36 advantage with 7:43 remaining, but Campbell closed on a 16-6 streak, sparked by an Ashlyn Hampton jumper in the lane, and followed by back-to-back triples from Luana Serranho and Bowns, cutting the lead to 47-44 with 5:07 to go.

With 1:13 to play, Tuelle’s fast break layup brought CU within two at 51-49, and after a defensive stop, Hayley Barber again found the freshman on the right wing for the open three, putting Campbell in front for good.

The Camels held CSU to just one field goal over their decisive run in the final 7:43, with the Buccaneers hitting just one of their last 11 attempts from the floor.

Tuelle finished the night with eight points and four rebounds, hitting 3-of-6 shots, including 2-of-4 from distance. Lauren Carter posted a team-high 13 points, nine coming in the first half, along with six rebounds, while Hampton notched 10 points with five boards. Barber tallied four assists with three steals and four points.

Breannah Bretches led CSU with 13 points, while Shelby Wilbands and Rachel Burns gathered 12 each. Burns added a game-high seven rebounds, while Weknyne Dumorne blocked five shots with six rebounds for the Bucs.

CSU mounted an 8-0 run to start the second quarter, all from Wilbanks, to make it 18-10 before two Barber free throws, but an 11-4 CU run to close the half, with a layup from Hampton with 17 seconds to go, cut the CSU lead to 22-21 at the break.

Campbell’s 7-0 spurt to start the third quarter made it an 18-4 run around the half.

Campbell converted 14 CSU turnovers into 19 points in the win, while out-rebounding the Bucs 40-36, including 17 offensive boards.

Next up, Campbell heads back on the road, traveling to Big South-leading Radford on Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.
