Lannah Price added to her lustrous athletic legacy at South Johnston with a walk-off home run in the eighth-inning for a 1-0 second-round playoff win over visiting West Carteret on Friday night.
The blast from the Virginia Commonwealth volleyball signee gave South a split on the diamond, offsetting a 7-3 baseball loss to Jacksonville at Bruce Coats Field on the other side of the Trojans’ athletic complex.
Senior Ava Strickland pitched all eight innings of the shutout as the Patriots (19-5) managed seven hits and one walk but were set down 12 times on strikeouts.
South (21-1) won for the 21st straight time since an 8-5 loss at Corinth Holders in the season opener on February 28.
The Trojans are scheduled to host Richlands in the third round on Tuesday.
South’s baseball team finished 16-9 despite having a 9-8 lead in hits. The Cardinals (15-10) went ahead to stay with four runs in the second. Jace Brindel had a home run and three RBIs for the visitors.

Ava Strickland had 12 strikeouts for the Trojans in the second round.
