Harnett Central battled to extend the match after falling behind 2-0, but lost 3-1 to visiting Lee County in a Tri-County Six 3-A Conference varsity volleyball match Thursday.

“We fought back in the third and got off to a slow start (in the fourth),” said Harnett Central coach Jason Harrell. “Tonight we made a lot of unforced errors. Lee Senior is a great team. They scored and did everything they should do. We just didn’t do our job tonight. We had unforced errors at critical times.”

Thursday’s match was Central’s third in three days after not having played since September 11 due to the effects of Hurricane Florence. Central lost at defending conference champion Union Pines Tuesday and won at non-conference county rival Overhills Wednesday.

“This season hasn’t set up well for us schedule-wise because of things out of our control,” Harrell said. “But I think we’ll be better for it in the end. The girls aren’t giving up. They’re fighting. Our record isn’t what we wanted it to be right now, but we think by the end, we’ll be where we need to be. I love the effort and intensity. The girls are fighting and they trying hard. Right now we’ve just got to close the deal. I think if we clean up some of our errors, we’ll be more competitive.”

Ally Honeycutt had 13 kills, Syniah McMiller had 11 kills and five blocks, Lyndsey Brewer had seven kills and three blocks, Kylee Frailey had six kills and 11 digs, Katelyn Everette had 26 assists and 10 digs and Alexis Gordon had 18 digs to lead the Trojans (3-9, 0-3 TCSC).

After the Yellow Jackets (9-2, 3-0) took a 2-0 lead in the match, Central fought back in the third set. With Lee holding a 9-6 lead, back-to-back kills from Honeycutt, both assisted by Everette, sparked a 14-3 run to put Central in control of the set. With Central holding set point at 24-17, a 5-0 run kept Lee alive until McMiller ended the set with a kill, assisted by Everette.

Lee took control of the fourth set early with a 6-0 run. Central fought back to cut the lead to as low as three, at 13-10, but Lee ended the match on a 12-6 run.

Harnett Central has back-to-back matches with county and conference rival Western Harnett up next, hosting the Eagles n Monday before traveling to Western on Tuesday.
