Midway swept varsity basketball contests against visiting Sampson County rival Hobbton on Thursday night.

Midway won a 58-13 rout over Hobbton in the girls game.

“What I liked about I saw, no matter what was going on, not everybody was shooting well tonight and not all of the buckets were falling in, but everybody kept finding energy,” said Midway girls coach Allen McLamb. “If we can find energy and play through when we’re not shooting well and keep playing hard defensively, we’re going to be fine.”

Sophomore Kris’Shyia McKoy had 16 points and eight steals to lead the Raiders (4-1).

Jenna Pope had seven points, eight rebounds and four steals. Allison Belflowers and Rylie Williams had seven points apiece. Caitlyn Holland had six points and eight steals. Kaylah Jackson had four points and seven rebounds. Sydney Williams had three points and five steals. Ashante Warren had two points, eight rebounds and six steals. Alyssa Hargrove had two points, five rebounds and two blocks. Anaya West and Makenzi Hudson had two points apiece.

Freshman Ciara Bryant had five points to lead the Wildcats (0-2).

Kristty Cruz and Jayla Wilkes had three points apiece. Alexis Reid had two points.

Midway outscored Hobbton in all four quarters: 11-1 in the first, 19-5 in the second, 14-7 in the third and 14-0 in the fourth.

Midway boys win, 58-35

Despite a third-quarter surge from Hobbton, Midway took a 58-35 win in the boys game.

“We’ve played four games so far and every game we’ve been in, we’ve won the first half and come out in the third quarter and been lackluster,” said Midway boys coach Aaron Lane. “I challenged the guys tonight in the third quarter, ‘This right here marks what we’re going to be for the rest of the year. Are we just going to allow teams to come back in the third quarter or are we going to put our foot on their neck and win the game?’ That’s what we’ve been wanting to do. We wanted to put the pedal to the metal and finish a game for the first time this year. I’m proud of them for that tonight.”

Senior Luke Strickland had 15 points and junior Thornton Baggett had 12 points to lead the Raiders (3-1).

Tyler Godwin had eight points. Mickael Barrow had seven points. Jaden Covington and Cameron Barefoot had five points apiece. Wyatt Holland had four points. Brandon Cousar had two points.

Senior Jordan Pearsall had 16 points to pace the Wildcats (0-2).

D.J. Robinson had six points. Keelssyn Martinez had five points. Jackson Weeks and Daniel Britt had three points apiece. Jaelyn Holliday had two points.

Midway controlled most of the first half and the early part of the third quarter to hold a 36-13 near the halfway point of the third. Hobbton rallied with a 16-2 run, cutting the lead to eight on a pair of Pearsall free throws at the start of the fourth.

But Midway responded by ending the game on a 20-6 run.
“One thing about basketball is when you make shots, everything looks a lot better,” Lane said. “And we hit some big shots tonight. Luke, Mickael and Thornton had some big three-pointers there in the second half and we were able to get the ball inside to Tyler Godwin and Jaden Covington and they were able to make some shots.”

Midway travels to county rival Lakewood on Friday. Hobbton is at home against James Kenan on Tuesday.
