Midway’s varsity volleyball team cruised past visiting Southeastern Athletic 2-A Conference opponent West Bladen in straight sets on Senior Night on Tuesday to finish undefeated in conference play. Individual set scores were 25-12, 25-13 and 25-10.
“They did a super job,” said Midway coach Susan Clark.
In addition to going unbeaten in all of their conference matches, the Raiders (21-0, 12-0 SAC) did not lose a set in conference play.
Senior Blair Baggett had 15 kills, five digs and two aces on six service points, senior Jaycie Byrd had a double-double, with 29 assists and 10 digs, and held serve for six points, and junior McKenzie Williams had 17 digs and one ace on 10 service points to lead the Raiders.
Kasey Calcutt had eight kills and four digs and held serve for two points. Morgan Hall had six kills, one assist, one block and three digs and held serve for one point. Mallory Baggett had three kills, two digs and two aces on 19 service points. Kaedyn Moran had two kills, one block and two digs. Bella Barefoot had two kills, one block and one dig. Morgan Naylor had one kill, eight assists and one dig and held serve for four points. Morgan Williams and Brianna Knowles had one kill apiece. Lillie Kate Parker had one assist and four digs.
Senior Emily Young had two kills and three assists and senior Whitney McLean had two kills and one block to lead the Knights (5-14, 3-9).
Prior to the match, Midway honored six seniors: Jaycie Byrd, Lillie Kate Parker, Blair Baggett, Mallory Baggett, Brianna Knowles and Kasey Calcutt.
“I’m really going to miss them,” Clark said. “And tonight was special, because we were able to put them in any kind of position. I wanted them to have as much time on the floor as they possibly could and their teammates did that for them. Brianna has some medical issues and can’t even lift her right arm, but we were able to protect her and let her get her Senior Night in and play a couple of rotations.”
West Bladen’s lone lead in the entire match was at 1-0 at the beginning of the second set. Midway stayed in control of all three sets otherwise.
Looking to increase its strength of schedule in order to secure a higher playoff seed, Midway made a late addition to its schedule and will wrap up the regular season with a nonconference match against visiting Mintz Christian Academy (15-0) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
“We added another game because we had a couple of opponents cancel and we’re fighting for first place (in the 2-A East),” Clark said. “Every day we float from first to second, second to first. Finding one is a hard thing to do, but we’re going to play Mintz and they’re 15-0 and undefeated, as well. So, it will be a good contest.”
