After a span of significant improvement in participation and performance as coach of boys and girls tennis at Harnett Central, Jay James is leaving to take over the girls program at West Johnston. His record was 46-19 in four years with the Central girls and 27-8 in three seasons with the boys. Holden Poole will be coaching girls tennis for the Trojans. … Harnett Central golfer Michael Snyder tied for fifth at the Carolinas Junior Boys Championship at Prestonwood in Cary, finishing Saturday with a 6-under par 210 score for three rounds. … Atlanta extended its winning streak to eight games Sunday with a 6-3 victory over visiting Miami. … Shane van Gisbergen won his NASCAR Cup debut in the first street race for the series in Chicago on Sunday. The New Zealand native became the first driver to win his first Cup race since Johnny Rutherford at Daytona in 1963. … Rickie Fowler made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit after finishing in a tie with Adam Hadwin and Colin Morikawa at 24-under par for 72 holes. … The host New York Mets downed San Francisco, 8-4, in the Sunday night MLB game. … The Los Angeles Angels visit San Diego tonight (Fox Sports 1, 9:40 p.m.). Shohei Ohtani hit his MLB-leading 31st homer of the season for the Angels in a 5-2 win over visiting Arizona on Sunday.
