The Overhills varsity boys basketball team avenged its only loss in the Patriot 4-A/3-A Athletic Conference by topping visiting Westover 52-49 on Friday night.
The Wolverines beat the Jaguars 67-49 at Westover on Jan. 2.
“We had 29 turnovers the first game and you can’t beat anybody doing that,” said Overhills coach Tony Lewis. “We did a better job of standing our ground with them the second time and we forced them into some turnovers. Our guys were much more aggressive the second time.”
OHS point guard Xavier Edwards made two free throws in the closing seconds for the final margin on Friday night. Westover missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Zavian McLean led the Jaguars with 24 points.
Overhills is 17-4 overall and atop the standings at 12-1 in league play going into a Tuesday night game at South View. The Jaguars defeated the Tigers 69-42 on Jan. 31.
On Thursday night, Overhills visits Terry Sanford, which enters the week at 14-5 and 11-2, in what shapes up as a crucial encounter in terms of the regular-season title.
The Jaguars host Pine Forest for Senior Night on Friday.
Freshman Iyonnah Council had 20 points for the Overhills girls (8-9, 5-8 PAC) in a 66-26 rout of Westover. The Lady Jaguars jumped out to a 19-1 lead in the first quarter and were ahead 32-6 at the half.
Another freshman, Maaika Dones, had 13 points for Overhills and senior Mikayla Jackson added 10.
