Deshawn Lewis opened the scoring on a touchdown run for Overhills and the Jaguars never trailed in a 50-13 varsity football win at Harnett Central on Friday night.
Lewis had three touchdowns for the game.
After a Trojans turnover on a fumble, Overhills capitalized with its second TD.
Central struck back with a 30-yard scoring pass from Hayden Smith to Everett Blake. A touchdown toss by Zion Gilliam of the Jaguars preceded a sack for a safety by the visitors and a short scoring carry by Tyshawn Bryant.
“We were going back and forth in the first quarter,” said Central coach Matt Migliore. “We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times, which we can’t do and stay in the game.”
Bryant had a 5-yard run for a touchdown as Overhills led 36-6 at the half.
A 70-yard run to the end zone by Brandon Booker was a second-half highlight for the Trojans.
The Jaguars added a 15-yard scoring run by Lewis and a final touchdown through the air in their season opener.
Nasir McDaniel had a scoring reception in the win. Charles Sias and Devin Palmer had rushing touchdowns.
OHS finished with 248 yards rushing and 173 yards passing.
Central slipped to 0-2.
“You could tell they had played a game and we hadn’t,” said Overhills coach Mark Kirk. “Some of our kids kind of had that deer in the headlights look to start the game, but they settled in. We were able to apply some defensive pressure.”
The Jaguars defense generated six turnovers, while Overhills did not have a turnover on offense.
Bryant, Terrell Martin, Sias and Zion Hayes were in on five tackles each for the Jaguars. Hayes had four tackles for losses.
