Progress pleases Penny going into open date

After a pair of 42-0 losses to Union Pines and South Johnston, Triton football coach Ben Penny was pleased to see better play in a 14-12 loss at Sanderson on Friday night.

“We answered the call,” Penny said. “Four areas we needed to improve in were effort, blocking, tackling and protecting the football. We did that.

“We fell short the end, 14-12. Sanderson was a good football team

“I’m excited about how we ended the nonconference schedule and we are looking forward to the bye week. I’m bery proud of our football team.”

Chris Hicks scored the first touchdown of the season for the Hawks on a 12-yard run. Jared Lopez kicked the extra point and also had a 32-yard field goal.

Triton also recorded a safety.

Junior quarterback Alan Hinson completed 3 of 9 passes for 38 yards. O’Brian Ward had a catch for 23 yards. Hicks had two receptions for 16 yards.

Jamarcus Shaw had 94 yards rushing on 20 carries. Ward gained 45 yards on 14 rushes. Ahmad Morris ran four times for 16 yards. Hicks had three rushed for 29 yards on three tries.

The Hawks will be focused on continuing to improve during before opening All American Conference play at E.E. Smith on Friday, September 20, at 7 p.m.
