Host Midway met Rosewood during the final football scrimmage of the Sampson County Jamboree Friday, scoring two touchdowns and allowing just one during the game.

“We got a little better,” said Midway coach Cory Barnes. “Rosewood is a good program. Coach (Robert) Britt over there does a great job. They’re very sound. They’re very coached-up. We knew they would be a test for us in this scrimmage and get us better and we needed that.”

“We’ve got to get better in our run game. We’re trying to figure out our combination up front since we graduated a lot of guys on the front line. I thought the defense flew around and played some sound football. We were also lined up wrong on some things, but that comes from scrimmages when you don’t have time to prepare for teams and formations and stuff like that. But overall, I thought we got better from Wednesday (in a scrimmage at Triton) to now and hopefully we’ll take it into week one when we play at Hobbton.”

The Raiders were without senior quarterback Wyatt Holland because of a back injury. Barnes was pleased with the play of junior Casey Culbreth in his stead.

“It was tough not having our senior quarterback out there tonight,” Barnes said. “But Casey did a really good job, I think, on making some decisions. He missed on some throws, but he also made some runs that were very athletic.”

Midway scored the lone touchdown of the first half when Dustin Williams ran for a three-yard score. Culbreth threw to Hagan Lanier for the two-point conversion.

The Eagles scored on a three-yard Keovin Vance touchdown run and quarterback Rocco Raper ran for two.

The clock ran out on the scrimmage with Midway facing third-and-goal at the Rosewood two-yard-line. The coaches agreed to finish the series of downs, leading to Culbreth scoring on a two-yard run.

Midway opens the season at Sampson County rival Hobbton on Friday.

“We’ve got to be sound offensively and defensively,” Barnes said. “We’ve got to respect our opponent. We’re going on the road. It’s always harder to win on the road. We’ve just got to be sound in our technique and what we do. And hopefully we have some guys back from injury. We had some injuries throughout the week. Hopefully we can have some guys back and put it all together and go to Newton Grove and try to get a win.”
