Midway’s varsity football team celebrated Homecoming with a 59-14 rout over visiting Southeastern Athletic 2-A Conference opponent Red Springs om Thursday night.
“We had a little slow start defensively and a couple of penalties,” said Midway coach Kyle Stevens. “We sort of gave them some field position and let them score. It was a little tighter at half than we wanted it to be. Then we came out in the second half and got three kickoffs in a row that the offense scored on an that’s pretty much all she wrote.”
Junior Tripp Westbrook completed 9-of-11 passes for 194 yards and six touchdowns, with no interceptions, senior Jamir McRae had four receptions for 140 yards and three touchdowns and sophomore Cody Ammons ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries to lead the Raiders (5-2, 3-0 SAC).
“Jamir’s really come on in the second half of the season,” Stevens said. “He had the dropsies the first couple of weeks in the season. He started cleaning that up a little bit and now he’s got five touchdowns in the last two weeks and is just playing really well.”
Trey Gregory ran for 67 yards on four carries and had two receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown. Casey Culbreth had two receptions for 21 yards and two touchdowns. Mason Carroll ran for 13 yards on three carries. Cameron Cousar had an 11-yard reception. Gehemiah Blue ran for six yards on three carries.
Senior Mishon Wilson ran for 69 yards on 11 carries and had four receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown, junior Curtis Wilson, Jr. ran for 65 yards on 12 carries and senior Jamey Tedder completed 3-of-6 passes for seven yards and ran for 61 yards on 11 carries to lead the Red Devils (0-6, 0-2).
Midway scored on the opening drive of the game when Westbrook completed a 26-yard touchdown to Gregory and Gregory ran for two.
Red Springs answered on its ensuing drive with Tyvon Locklear running for a three-yard touchdown, but the conversion attempt was no good.
Midway got three straight touchdowns from Westbrook connecting with McRae, first on a 36-yard pass, then on a six-yard completion and finally a screen pass McRae took 80 yards to the end zone. The conversion on the first was no good, but Gregory ran for two after the second and third scores.
Red Springs scored just before halftime when Scottie Locklear completed a nine-yard touchdown to Mishon Wilson and Curtis Wilson, Jr. ran for two, cutting Midway’s lead to 30-14 at halftime.
Midway scored 22 straight points without Red Springs’ offense taking the field to start the second half. After Zi Sparks recovered an onside kick to open the half, Westbrook completed an 8-yard touchdown to Culbreth, but the conversion was no good.
Hunter Tyndall recovered a second onside kick, leading to Westbrook throwing a 13-yard touchdown to Culbreth and throwing to Kendrick Tyndall for two.
The ensuing kickoff was not an onside kick, but Gregory recovered it for Midway anyway, leading to Ammons scoring on a 17-yard run, followed by Gregory running for two.
Midway’s final score came late in the third on a 10-yard Ammons run, followed by Hagan Lanier kicking the extra point.
Midway travels to conference opponent St. Pauls (4-1, 2-0) next Friday.
