Midway’s varsity volleyball team took a 3-0 win on the road against rival Triton by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16 Wednesday.
“They looked really good against Cleveland Monday night (Midway won 3-1 at home),” said Midway coach Susan Clark. “Tonight, they came out flat. No energy. But they did what they needed to do.”
First-year Triton coach Sarah Haney said serve receive was a struggle for Triton.
“Serve receive gets us,” Haney said. “I thought with how we started yesterday (Triton beat visiting Lee County 3-2), serve receive was not an issue, because we worked on it in practice a lot. So, when we got out there and not doing good on serve receive, I was like ‘This is a completely different team.’ It’s hard to see what they can do and then not do it out of the court.”
Senior Blair Baggett had nine kills, one assist, seven digs and one ace on nine service points to lead the Raiders (2-0).
“She’s a great leader,” Clark said. “Verbally and physically, she does a good job of bringing them back around to where they should be.”
Morgan Hall had five kills, one block, four digs and one ace on five service points. Kaedyn Moran had four kills, four digs and two aces on four service points. Jaycie Byrd had three kills, nine assists, one dig and six aces on 10 service points. Brianna Knowles had two kills, two blocks and two digs. Bella Barefoot had two kills and three digs. McKenzie Williams had one kill, four assists, 11 digs and three aces on six service points. Kasey Calcutt had one kill. Morgan Naylor had 11 assists and one ace on seven service points. Mallory Baggett had three digs. Morgan Williams had two digs.
Sophomore Chyna Massey had four kills, one block and one dig and junior Olivia Godwin had four kills, three digs and one ace on six service points to lead the Hawks (1-1).
“(Massey) doesn’t stop,” Haney said. “She’s worked really hard on when we don’t get a good pass and we can’t get that good set up there, she’s worked really hard on her timing to adjust and get that ball.”
One of the key players Triton lost to graduation last year was setter Reagan Bradham. The Hawks’ new setter this season is her younger sister, freshman Sydney Bradham. She had 11 assists and seven digs Wednesday.
“Luckily, she’s played with some of these girls before in club ball,” Haney said. “So, she has that connection with some of them already, so it helps a little bit. She’s playing all the way around as a setter and she’s got big shoes to fill. It’s not going to take much for her to fill them, but she’s just got to build up that confidence and maturity of the volleyball game to be able to get where she needs to be.”
Carleigh Hemby had two kills, two blocks and four digs and held serve for three points. Baylee Reagan had one kill and two digs and held serve for five points. Ava Blackman had 13 digs and one ace on four service points. Mary Charlotte Pope had four digs and held serve for two points. Camryn Conway and Emma Stanley had three digs apiece.
The first set was close early, but with Triton leading 6-3, Midway scored six unanswered points to take the lead. Midway led by as much as seven, at 19-12, and eventually won the set 25-18.
With Triton leading 5-4 in the second set, Midway took the lead with five unanswered points. The Raiders led by as much as eight, at 19-11, before eventually taking the set 25-17.
