Recent grad helps team to national softball championship

Delaney Cumbie, valedictorian of the Class of 2018 at Cape Fear Christian Academy, helped the Carolina Cardinals Chandler team to its third consecutive class A 18-and-under national softball championship on July 28 in Salem, Va.

Cumbie started the championship game at third base and had five chances with no errors. The UNC Greensboro signee went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. She scored three runs and had an RBI.

The team went undefeated, downing the Bombers Fastpitch of Illinois and the STPS Ponies(N.Y.) in pool play.

The Cardinals topped the Southern Heat (Ga.), the Tennessee Crusaders, Florida Gold John, Texas Bombers, Hanover Lady Hornets (Va.), Carolina Cardinals Moose (N.C.), and the OFC Heat Orange (Ohio) in bracket play.
