The Gryphons (3-4) avenged a 4-1 loss at home to South (4-2) on March 9.

Former South coach Pat Smith, a recent inductee to the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, guides the Rocky Mount program. Smith has won 3-A state championships at South and Rocky Mount.

Seniors Clay Milburn, Zachary McLamb and Javier Amezquita pitched for South on Friday.

The Trojans were scheduled to host Cardinal Gibbons on Saturday at noon. Gibbons topped the Trojans 9-6 in Raleigh on Feb. 28.
