South Johnston grabbed some early momentum in its varsity football game at Holly Springs on Thursday night, but a safety was a game changer as the Golden Hawks went on to a 30-7 victory.
The Trojans made a goal-line stand on Holly Springs’ opening drive and gave the offense the ball at its own 1-yard line. The Trojans were stopped in the end zone for a safety on the next play as Holly Springs took a 2-0 lead with 6:41 to play in the first quarter.
The hosts expanded the margin to 16-0 at the half.
South scored on a 20-yard pass from Chase Carroll to C.J. Redmond to trim the lead to 23-7 in the third quarter.
Holly Springs improved to 2-0 while South is 0-2 going into a home game with Triton on Friday night, Sept. 6.
