Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys soccer team overcame the heat and an early deficit to defeat visiting Wayne Prep, 4-2, on Tuesday.

Caden Scarborough had a hat trick as the hosts improved to 2-1 wieight of CFCA’s 20 shots on goal.

The Eagles had a 3-goal flurry after the Generals (0-3) took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick.

Zeke Brock equalized in the 17th minute and Scarborough tallied twice before a break in the 21st minute.

“Caden has been playing offensive center mid for us this season and has been pivotal as far as distributing the ball and taking shots when attacking,” said CFCA coach Bill Parrish.

Brock had four shots on goal and one assist. Cade Godwin put six shots on goal with an assist. Ethan Beasley and Thomas Honeycutt each had a shot on goal.

Goalie Jakson Cullen had eight saves.

“Jakson has been a beast for us so far,” Parrish said.

Cullen hasn’t played soccer since his childhood and fellow senior Brock, a standout in baseball and basketball, is playing soccer for the first time for the Eagles.

“Our defense has played very well for us,” Parrish said. “Anchoring our back line are seniors Patrick Raynor, Wyatt Medlin, Cole Godwin and freshman Chris Crume. These guys are very physical defenders and have made some great stops and defensive takeaways. Greyson Avent and Landon Mclamb have also helped us on defense.

“We’ve had some solid and physical play by our defensive midfielders, Eli Burns, B.J. Surles, Lathan Wilborn, Micah Andemichael and Greyson Avent have all stepped into those roles and performed well.

“It was a very hot and physical game. I feel we started out a bit slow today and we were definitely not playing our best soccer early on. We finally settled and started to possess the ball more and win the 50/50 balls more.

“It’s always tough playing in the heat and sometimes holiday weekends impact teams more than we think. I was glad and also proud of the guys who stepped up their play and found a way to perform well today.”
