Host West Johnston downed South Johnston 44-20 on Tuesday night in the first round of the Greater Neuse 3-A Conference varsity girls basketball tournament.

The Lady Trojans were 2-21 for the 2017-18 season, but first-year South coach Latissa Hampton has a lot of young players who gained valuable experience coming back.

Smithfield-Selma topped Cleveland 49-28 on Tuesday night in other first-round girls game.

The semifinals are at East Wake on Thursday night with West Johnston facing second-seeded Clayton and Smithfield-Selma opposing top-seeded East Wake.
