SJ hoops wins five of six at Mount Olive

South Johnston’s varsity boys basketball team won five of six games in a jamboree at Mount Olive on Friday and Saturday.

The Trojans topped Rosewood and Ayden-Grifton on Friday night before falling to Athens Drive.

South defeated Spring Creek, Southern Wayne and Greenville Rose on Saturday. Rose was without guard Creighton Lebo, son of former East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo.

“We saw everything we wanted to see,” said South coach Brody Massengill. “Some teams played man-to-man and some played zone. Two or three teams pressed us. We got to play some physical games.”

Trojans returner Jacob Thornton is with a USA team in Spain, but Massengill said 2017-18 starters C.J. Ray and JaQuain Smith played well.

“We had 10 to 11 guys and everybody got to play a bunch,” Massengill said. “We were dealing with some pressure and learning a little bit about what it takes to win.”

The Trojans are scheduled to visit Princeton on Thursday for matchups with James Kenan and Parrott Academy.
