SJ takes 58-10 Homecoming victory over Smithfield-Selma

South Johnston’s varsity football team rolled to a 58-10 Greater Neuse 3-A Conference win over Smithfield-Selma on Friday night to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league play

South quarterback Josh Schindler opened the scoring on a 2-yard run with 10:18 left in the first quarter after a lengthy gain by Jaequan Wells.

The Spartans (1-8, 1-4) tied the score at 7 on a 1-yard keeper by J.B. Jones after a long kickoff return.

The Trojans went ahead to stay on a 7-yard touchdown run by Tony Faison with 6:58 left in the first quarter.

A fumble recovery by Levi Wiggins at the SSS 9 led to a 3-yard scoring run by Heze Bailey for a 21-7 South advantage with 5:18 left in the first quarter.

A field goal by Jesse Vallecillo-Lopez got the Spartans within 21-10 with 8:49 left in the first half.

Schindler hit Jawuan Smith on a scoring pass for a 28-10 South advantage with 8:08 to go in the half. Jawuan .Smith returned a punt to put the Trojans up, 35-10, with 4:06 remaining in the half.

Heze Bailey had a 30-yard touchdown catch with 36 seconds left in the half for a 42-10 South lead at the break.

Bailey was named Homecoming king at halftime and Gabby Godwin was announced as queen.

Second-half TDs for the Trojans came on runs by Jawuan Smith and Jeffrey Hannah Jr.

Keyshawn Sanders had two interceptions for South and Jaquain Smith had one.

“We were able to use our depth and players stepped up,” said South coach Matt Riggsbee. “Our film study helped us prepare for the multiple sets that SSS uses.”

South visits East Wake (3-5, 1-1) on Friday night. The Warriors are coming off a 30-20 win at home over West Johnston.
