SJ wins league openers on diamond

South Johnston won make-up games with visiting Clayton in baseball and softball on Thursday night. The matchups were the first in Greater Neuse 3-A Conference play for the Trojan teams.

South won the baseball game 11-1 in six innings as seniors Jay McKenzie and Dylan Honeycutt pitched for the Trojans.

The hosts scored four times in the third inning to lead 6-1.

South (5-3, 1-0) was scheduled to play Rosewood at Fleming Stadium in Wilson on Friday night (March 23). The Trojans return to league play on Tuesday night at Clayton.

The South softball team improved to 4-2 overall with a 13-3 win over the Comets.

The Trojans were scheduled to host North Johnston for a nonconference softball contest on Friday night.

South, 0-5-1 in girls soccer, also was scheduled to take on North Johnston on Friday night.
