Triton’s varsity softball team accomplished a 14-run swing in its last two at-bats for an 18-9 win in the season opener at Rosewood on Thursday evening.

“They didn’t quit,” said Hawks coach Mark Whitman after his club came back from a 9-4 deficit going into the top of the seventh inning.
Gracyn Slaughter singled to start the seventh. Haley Hicks drew a walk. A double by Alexis Howard drove in two runs. Brittany Ireland had an RBI single. Winning pitcher Caroline Marshall contributed an RBI single to trim the margin to 9-8. Hayden Smith’s RBI double plated the tying run.
Freshman leadoff batter Kaila Cooney and Howard had two hits each as Triton scored nine times in the eighth inning. Howard doubled in her second plate appearance of the inning. Hicks had a double. Ireland had a hit and drew a walk. Marshall had a hit with the bases loaded. Kathryn Elliott and Hayden Smith drew walks with the bases loaded.
“They started hitting their pitches,” Whitman said.
Howard (3 RBIs) and Cooney each went 4-for-6 on the day. Ireland went 3-for-4, scored three runs and had two RBIs.
Getting two hits each were Slaughter, Elliott, Smith, Marshall and Hicks. Samantha Herring had one hit in a total of 22 for the Hawks.
Triton starter Leanna Whaley, an Appalachian State signee, pitched six innings. She allowed five hits, walked four and struck out six before leaving the game with an apparent arm strain.
Whitman did not know her status going forward following the game.
Triton’s varsity is scheduled to host Rosewood on Monday at 6 p.m.
