South alumnus Webb to coach football

Lee Webb has been named football coach at his alma mater.

South Johnston has named Lee Webb as its new football coach.

Webb graduated from South in 2007 after playing under former coach Joe Salas, who is now at Hobbton.

Webb has been defensive coordinator for the past four seasons for the Trojans.

“Coach Webb is a hard worker and he loves our community,” said South athletic director Brody Massengill. “He has great energy and passion. The kids were ecstatic about the opportunity to play for him when they were told today.”

Webb takes over for Matthew Riggsbee, who coached five seasons at South. The Trojans were 2-5 during the delayed and shortened 2021 season, including 1-4 in the Greater Neuse Conference.

South will be joining a league next school year that includes C.B. Aycock, Southern Wayne, West Johnston, Smithfield-Selma, East Wake, Fike and Hunt.

“We’re going to build the program around core values — work ethic, great attitudes, discipline, leadership and commitment,” Webb said. “It’s not just about the football program. It’s about getting everybody together on the same page.

“That’s what I love about South. Our guys are going to work. They know they’re never going to be bigger so they have to work for what they get.”
