South Johnston’s varsity boys basketball team got refocused defensively at halftime and pulled away to take a 65-46 nonconference win over visiting North Johnston on Friday night.

South’s lead was 29-25 at the break.

“We came out a little flat and they were aggressive,” said Trojans coach Brody Massengill after his team improved to 10-1. “The second half we started hot and were able to pull away.”

Jaquan Smith and C.J. Ray had 22 points each in the win. Jacob Thornton added 13.

North Johnston topped the hosts, 35-31, in the girls game.

South hosts Corinth Holders on Tuesday night and plays Harnett Central at home on Wednesday night before starting Greater Neuse 3-A Conference play at Clayton on Friday night.
