South Johnston opened its 2018-19 varsity boys basketball season on Monday night with a 66-42 win over visiting Midway as C.J. Ray led the Trojans with 24 points.
Thomas Dees had 10 points in the win. Jacob Thornton and JaQuain Smith added eight points each.
“We shot the ball really well in the first quarter,” said South coach Brody Massengill.
The Trojans coach indicated that South’s shot selection was not as good as the Raiders made defensive changes.
Massengill was pleased with the Trojans’ performance in their man-to-man defense.
“Jaquain just stepped off the football field, but he did some good things,” Massengill said. “We did a lot of good things and we’ve got a lot of things to work on. It was a typical first game from that standpoint.”
