South Johnston overcame a 6-1 deficit for an 8-7 nonconference varsity baseball win over visiting Triton on Friday night.
“We struggled defensively late in the game,” said Hawks coach Jake Willis. “We really didn’t keep our at-bats going late in the game.”
Payden Crews was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Triton (1-1). Xander Johnson was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Sam Capps had a hit and an RBI. Dalen Thompson homered.
Jimmy Hines was 2-for-3 for South with two runs. Chase Carroll was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Parker Wood went 2-for-4.
Left-hander Kannon Crumpler started on the mound for the Trojans and threw 50 pitches. The Trojans got relief contributions from Paul Olive, Dewayne Schneider and Holden McLeod.
The Hawks visit Cleveland on Tuesday at 7 p.m. South (1-1) travels to Union Pines on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.
