Robert Bailey set the tone for South Johnston with an early interception and the Trojans went on to a 31-7 home win over Western Harnett to open the season on Friday night.

Riley Adams put the Trojans ahead to stay with a 2-yard scoring keeper in the first quarter and Alex Lee extended the lead to 10-0 with a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter.

The Eagles pulled within 10-7 on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Trent Botts to Bryce Browning in the second quarter.

Aiden Williams had 22 carries for 134 yards and two TDs for the Trojans.

Adams completed 17 of 27 for 136 yards with a scoring pass to Connor Lee, who had five catches for 75 yards. Kalib Brown snared seven tosses for 48 yards for South.

Kalib Williams had five solo tackles for the hosts. Jaekob Robinson and Lucas Layman each had a pair of tackles for losses.

Botts completed 10 of 17 for 187 yards with Browning making eight receptions for 178 yards.

“There is a lot of stuff we have to work on,” said Trojans coach Lee Webb, “but we showed a lot of maturity and composure.”

South travels to Triton on Friday night for a kickoff at 7 p.m. The Trojans topped the visiting Hawks, 33-20, last season.

“It’s always going to be a good game,” Webb said. “Coach (Ben) Penny and his staff do a great job. A lot of the guys know each other. It will be exciting.”

Western plays its first home game Friday night against West Johnston (1-0).
