Host South View pulled away to a 47-18 nonconference varsity football win over Triton on Friday night.
The Hawks got off to a fast start on a 64-yard touchdown run by Malik McNeill on its second play from scrimmage.
Triton added subsequent scores from Ro’mello Cowan (four and 21 yards) and were within 19-18 late in the first half.
“We had some mental mistakes in the second half,” said Hawks coach Ben Penny. “South View is big, fast and strong. They’re well-coached and they have good tradition. We played three quarters of solid football and let them score in the fourth quarter.”
The Tigers (1-1) outscored Triton 14-0 in the final period.
McNeill finished with nine carries for 84 yards. Cowan had 12 rushes for 70 yards.
Matthew Pemberton ran 26 times for 190 yards with four touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions for South View (1-1). Jevon Carter completed 10 of 15 passes for 120 yards with two scores for the Tigers.
The Hawks were coming off a 52-48 loss to Overhills after leading 48-30 with under eight minutes left.
“Overhills is a proven team,” Penny said. “We’ve played two pretty good 4-A teams. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes. A win over South Johnston would turn the season around.”
Triton visits South, also 0-2, on Friday night.
“We must understand the importance in a rival game of coming out on fire,” Penny said.
