South Johnston got a pair of Greater Neuse 3-A Conference varsity basketball wins over visiting West Johnston on Tuesday night as the Trojans followed a 37-33 victory in the girls game with a 54-45 triumph in the boys game.
The Trojans jumped on top 6-0 in the boys game and pushed the advantage to 28-9 during the second quarter in improving to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in league play going into games Friday at Smithfield-Selma.
Jeremiah McLean scored South’s first three baskets and the Trojans never trailed.
The Wildcats (0-9, 0-7) had a 30-25 lead in scoring in the second half. South’s boys completed a season sweep of their neighboring rivals following an earlier 64-52 win at West.
The South girls were on the short end of a 35-33 score at West Johnston on Jan. 22 but got a pair of 3-pointers from Janay McDonald in the second quarter on Tuesday to take a 10-4 lead.
The outcome put the Lady Trojans at 2-9 for the season and 2-5 in the Greater Neuse while the West girls (5-5, 4-3) lost for the third time in four games going into conference matchups at home against East Wake on Friday.
West topped South, 43-38, in the junior varsity boys game.
