Harnett Central opened Tri-County Six 3-A Conference varsity boys soccer play Tuesday with an 8-1 loss to visiting Southern Lee.

“We definitely were not as sharp as we could be, but they were really good,” said Harnett Central coach Nick Brommer. “They played really well and they deserved to win.”

Both teams had long layoffs since their last games due to Hurricane Florence. Central’s previous game was 15 days prior and Southern Lee’s was 17 days beforehand.

“Our touch isn’t what it once was, as well as our fitness,” Brommer said. “We were a bit sloppy and as sharp as we once were and as we wanted to be at this point.”

Liam Peebles provided the lone goal for the Trojans (1-4-2, 0-1 TCSC) on an assist from Angel Ramirez.

Each goal for the Cavaliers (5-3, 1-0) came from a different player. Osvaldo Alvarez, Giovanni Vences, Ricardo Rodriquez, Alejandro Sanchez, Johnny Jimenez, Rush Campbell, Manny Hernandez and Fidel Hernandez had one goal apiece.

Southern Lee scored seven unanswered goals, three in the first half and four in the second.

With 10:27 left in the second half, Ramirez delivered a free kick from just past midfield that Peebles redirected into the goal for the Trojans’ lone score of the game.

The Cavaliers added one more goal two minutes later.

Harnett Central is in conference action at home again Wednesday hosting Harnett County rival Triton (3-4-2, 1-0). The Hawks are coming into the game off of a 6-0 conference-opening win against visiting county rival Western Harnett on Tuesday.

“We’ve just got to pick it up all together all the way from the back up to the front,” Brommer said. “We’ve just got to get our heads right.”
