SSS tops Trojans

Smithfield-Selma took a pair of Greater Neuse 3-A Conference varsity basketball wins at South Johnston on Thursday night.

Kavon Ward had 27 points and Anthony Council tallied 24 as the Spartans outscored the South boys 21-14 in the fourth quarter for a 71-60 victory.

C.J. Ray led South with 26 points. JaQuain Smith had 13 for the Trojans and Jacob Thornton added 12.

“They shot it well,” said South coach Brody Massengill. “They hit 10 3s. Every time they needed a basket, they got one.

“The score was a little bit deceptive because we had to foul at the end. I was proud of my guys. We just wish we could have had a couple of possessions back at the end in the fourth quarter.”

The outcome evened the regular-season series following South’s 70-69 win at SSS on Jan. 9.

The visitors took the girls game, 55-29.

South plays at Cleveland on Monday night.

“We’ve got three games left,” Massengill said. “We’ve got a shot at third in the conference, but we need to win at least two.”

The Trojans visit East Wake on Tuesday and host Cleveland for Senior Night on Thursday.
