BUIES CREEK — Thibaut Jacquel scored twice and set up another goal and Campbell ran its win streak to eight matches Wednesday night with a 4-0 victory over Gardner-Webb at the Eakes Complex.
Matt Lock added a goal and assist, while Alex Egeonu scored in his second-straight game for the Camels (11-2-1, 5-0), who stayed on top of the Big South Conference table with 15 points.
Samuel Lechuga made two saves to earn his Big South-leading eighth shutout in the nets and Campbell remained unbeaten (7-0-0) at home, while outscoring its visitors by an 18-1 margin.
Gardner-Webb (6-6-1, 3-2) dropped its second match in a row.
“I’m pleased with our group,” said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder. “Gardner-Webb was 3-1 coming in and we knew it was going to be a big game. Our guys were locked in. It was big to keep a clean sheet and that was good to see. We were very good in the attack. We left a couple chances out there, but were clinical in the second half.”
Lock finished off a 1-2 with Jacquel in the Runnin’ Bulldog box just 7:22 into the contest for his second goal of the season and put the Camels in front on the first shot of the match.
Jacquel, who entered as the country’s second-leading scorer, had a pair of chances in the first 20 minutes, but failed to cleanly meet Gideon Betz’ cross in the 18th and was denied by a diving save from keeper Daniel Husa two minutes later.
Hendrik Kortgodde provided Gardner-Webb’s first shot of the match in the 21st minute, but Lechuga calmly palmed the ball down and held.
Jalen James nearly doubled the lead for Campbell in the 26th minute after his shot beat Husa, but Simen Olsen recovered to clear the ball off the line.
GWU’s best chances of the night came after 36 minutes. Lechuga left his feet to parry Pedro Benito Ribero’s shot for a corner kick. Jorge Salgado rose for a header that stayed high and skimmed the top of the bar one minute later.
Husa charged off his line to deny Jacquel in the 63rd minute, and James’ goal two minutes later was disallowed when Jacquel was flagged offside.
Campbell finally doubled its margin in the 69th minute when Jacquel slotted home a penalty kick after Gardner-Webb was whistled for a handball in the box.
Egeonu rose for a free back post header off Lock’s 76th minute corner kick for his fourth goal of the year.
Jacquel finished the scoring in the 81st when he controlled a failed clearance in the area and powered a left-footed attempt inside the right post for his 15th strike of the season. Jacquel leads the Big South in goals and points (33) through 14 matches.
The Camels finished with a 14-7 edge in shots – 9-2 on target – and took seven corner kicks to just two for the visitors.
Off to the best start through 14 matches since the 1993 Camels opened 12-2, Campbell extended its win streak to the program’s longest since the 2008 squad won 12 in a row. Campbell, which has won its last four away from home, travels to UNC Asheville on Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
