Cape Fear Christian Academy completed its annual Senior Classic with boys and girls championships on Saturday.
The CFCA boys pulled away late in their matchup with Fayetteville Christian for a 70-57 victory.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead and defeated Fayetteville Christian, 44-25 for the title.
Zeke Brock scored 23 points in the final to total 60 points for the tournament as the CFCA boys improved to 2-3 after an 0-3 start against higher-classification teams.
Kayden Dunkins added 18 points on Saturday with some big threes in the final minutes. Cade Scarborough had 11 points and post player Cole Godwin added 10.
Godwin was not expected back for several weeks from a dislocated thumb.
“It started feeling better,” said Godwin, who teamed with freshman Lathan Wilborn to thwart the Warriors in the paint.
“Cole was a key piece,” said Eagles coach Dwain Ellis. “Had it not been for his offense and rebounding, who knows?”
Jakson Cullen had six points on Saturday and Elijah Ellis added two points with a pull-up jumper to turn momentum after a run by the Warriors (2-1).
The Warriors topped the Eagles, 64-55, for the Senior Classic championship last year. CFCA won the boys title for the first time since 2020.
The CFCA boys start Mid-Carolina Conference play at New Garden Friends in Greensboro on Tuesday, November 28.
CFCA girls
The Lady Eagles matched up with CFCA alumni on Friday night in an enjoyable experience for fans and competitors.
The CFCA girls led the rusty former players, 15-0, at the half. The alumni cut the final margin to 19-10 as current coach Ray Butts substituted liberally, the older players warmed up and senior point guard Ella John Dupree had some intentional turnovers.
CFCA match teacher Cherry Devane coached the alumni with great enthusiasm.
The spirit of the occasion appeared to carry over to the strong start of the Lady Eagles on Saturday.
“Great win,” Butts said. “Proud of how hard our team played. Our four seniors got to go out with a Senior Classic win.”
Seniors Dupree and Perri Caroline Ennis led the way with 15 points each.
Glenna McLamb had 13 points and Laney Trainer added one point.
The CFCA girls return to action on Friday, December 1, for their MCC opener at Bradford Academy in Mebane.
