Triton announces trio for HOF induction May 15

Chrystal Smith

The Triton High School Athletic Hall of Fame will add three new members on May 15 at ceremonies in the auditorium beginning at 6 p.m.

The class to be inducted includes versatile Chrystal Smith, who was a basketball standout at Campbell; LaVance McQueen, a multi-sport performer and highly-recruited football star and Candice Faircloth Smith, who excelled as a softball pitcher.

The trio will join the initial hall class of 2024 that included Robert Boykins, Rhonda Parks Charlot, Clay Eason,
Clayton White, Amanda Miller Smith and Wendy Simmons.

Here’s a look at the Class of 2025:

Chrystal Smith
(Class of 1992)

Smith was an Athlete of the Year at Triton, competing on a high level in basketball, track and field, and softball. She was all-conference several times and all-state as a senior in basketball.

She qualified for the state meet in track and field, setting school records as a member of the 4×100 and 4z200 relay teams.

She accepted a basketball scholarship to Campbell and played four years for legendary coach Wanda Watkins. She is sixth in career assists for the Lady Camels.

LaVance McQueen

McQueen was a standout in football, basketball and track.

A 4-year starter in football for the Hawks, he received college offers from programs including Alabama, Clemson, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and Wake Forest. He chose Duke, coached by Fred Goldsmith, and won ACC Freshman of the Week honors, making a game-winning interception against No. 13 Virginia and helping the Blue Devils to the Hall of Fame Bowl.

McQueen was first with Seattle in the pros before playing in the Canadian Football League.

Candice Faircloth Smith

She was a Most Outstanding Athlete at Triton, swimming and playing basketball as well as starring in the circle in softball. She was Pitcher of the Year in the conference and District Four for three straight years. She had 94 wins for the Hawks, a 0.64 career earned run average and 1,330 strikeouts.

She led Triton to three straight conference titles and a berth in the 3-A state semifinals in 2010.

She signed with UNC Wilmington and made 26 starts as a freshman.
