Triton’s varsity boys basketball team rallied in the second half to win, 63-56, at rival Midway as part of a varsity sweep on Thursday night.

“We started out pressing and they were getting easy buckets,” said Triton assistant Jimmy Holbrook. “We weren’t getting back on shooters. In the second half, we made an adjustment to go straight man and I think it helped us out a lot. And against their zone, our guards started attacking their zone and it was getting us easy buckets and we were just bringing guys up where we could get it into the middle.”

Holbrook filled the head coaching duties, as T.J. Morrison was serving the second game of a two-game automatic suspension for an ejection at South Johnston last week.

Senior Will Heard had 14 points, senior Jalen Evans had 11 points and sophomore Ahmad Morris had 10 points to lead the Hawks (6-4).

Romello Pegues and Nate McKoy had nine points apiece. Jaleel White had five points. Quashaun Williams had three points. J.J. Cowan added two points.

“Romello was big for us in the first half,” Holbrook said. “Will got into some foul trouble early and we held him out most of the first half and he came back in the second half and had a big second half. Him, Jalen and Nate had a big second half for us. And Ahmad was big for us in the first half, also.”

Holbrook was pleased with the top-to-bottom contribution from the team.

“It was definitely a team effort,” Holbrook said. “A lot of foul trouble. Guys stepped up when they were called upon.”

Senior Jamir McCrae had 18 points, senior Casey Culbreth had 14 points and junior Tripp Westbrook had 12 points to lead the Raiders (7-3).

Mbagnick Dione had six points, Trey Gregory had five points and Israel Cook had one point.

After Triton held a narrow 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, Midway outscored Triton 21-12 in the second to lead 31-23 at halftime.

But the Hawks outscored the Raiders 23-12 in the third quarter and 17-13 in the fourth to take the win.

Triton pulled away in the second half to take a 46-31 win over Midway in the girls game.

“Defensively, Midway is a well-coached team,” said Triton girls coach Richard Rozier. “(Midway coach Matthew Bagwell) does a great job of preparing those young ladies. And they definitely studied what we did in the last game. Unique (Cooke) helped a lot inside and really got us going on the defensive end and that helped us pull away.”

Freshman Nashara Watlington-McNeill paced the Hawks (6-4) with 13 points.

Unique Cooke had eight points. A’Shari Watlington had seven points. Kamari Walker and Abby Hood had five points apiece. JaNiah Smith, Mahogany McKoy, Jakiya Leach and Aubree Bass had two points apiece.

“They really played as a team and that’s something we’ve been emphasizing,” Rozier said. “We have a lot of great individual pieces, but we’re much stronger when we all come together.”

Senior Jaycie Byrd had 10 points to lead the Raiders (6-4).

Sisters Morgan and McKenzie Williams had five points apiece. Lizzy Kirkland had four points. Mallory Baggett had three points. Leah Culbreth and Peyton Herring had two points apiece.

Midway led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Triton outscored Midway 13-7 in the second quarter, 14-4 in the third and 12-10 in the fourth.

“We moved the ball (in the second half),” Rozier said. “In the first half, I think we didn’t want to make mistakes and in the second half, we played through those mistakes and made the right plays.”

Triton will take part in a tournament at Clinton beginning Monday. The boys meet Falcon Christian Academy (9-2) and the girls face Union (6-2). Midway is off until January 3 when the Raiders travel to Southeastern Athletic 2-A Conference opponent Fairmont.
