Triton gets wins over Cleveland

Triton’s boys basketball team rallied for a 57-56 nonconference win over Cleveland on Friday night to complete a varsity sweep.

The Lady Hawks prevailed, 45-38.

A free throw by Travion Sanders with 8.2 seconds left provided the winning margin for the Triton boys (4-3), who trailed 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.

“We settled down and played better defense,” said Hawks coach T.J. Morrison. “It was not pretty, but we’re making progress.”

Cleveland (6-2) led 45-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Senior Josiah Lett and junior Jamari Amerson had 17 points each for Triton as Lett made eight of 12 field goal attempts and Amerson hit six of 11. Amerson was five for nine on 3-pointers. Sanders had 11 points.

Ladrabious Eason grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hawks and Lett had eight. Keionta Burnett had four assists and three steals. Sanders finished with four assists and two steals.

The Lady Hawks also came back, outscoring the visitors, 19-5, in the fourth quarter to improve to 4-3.

Kaila Cooney had 15 points on five of nine shooting from behind the arc with six assists. Zoie Starling totaled 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Haley Tew and Anastasia McDonald scored six point each. Abby Hood scored five points.

Gracie Byrd had 10 rebounds for Triton. McDonald and Hood each had six rebounds.

Freshman Brooklynn Waller led the Cleveland girls (3-5) with 18 points.

Triton hosts Fuquay-Varina on Friday night.
