Union Pines dealt visiting Triton its first varsity girls basketball loss, 43-39, on Friday night.

Triton led 7-6 after eight minutes and the Lady Hawks were on top, 23-22, at the half.

The Vikings took a 30-29 lead into the fourth quarter. A basket by Tristan Ennis gave Triton a 35-34 lead but the hosts got a 3-pointer and stayed ahead the remainder of the game.

Triton was paced offensively by nine points from A’Shari Watlington. Ennis and Anastasia McDonald had eight points each. Kaila Cooney and Abby Hood tallied six points apiece. Aubree Bass added two points.

Ennis had 10 rebounds while Hood and Bass controlled five each. McDonald had five assists and Cooney had four. Hood had four steals.

“Not our best performance,” said Triton coach Wandy Simmons after the Lady Hawks slipped to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Tri-County Six 3-A Conference. “We did not box out and rebound which gave them opportunities to score.”

Union Pines is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in league play.
