With the score tied at 3 in Triton’s Tri-County Six 3-A Conference varsity softball game with visiting Lee County on Tuesday night, Kaila Cooney and Brittany Ireland led off the bottom of the seventh with hits for the Hawks.
A bunt by Hayden Smith moved the runners up and the Yellow Jackets intentionally walked Leanna Whaley. Cooney scored the winning run on a chopper to short by Kathryn Elliott.
Triton improved to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the league going into nonconference home game with C.B. Aycock tonight (Wednesday, April 18) at 6:30 p.m.
Cooney was 4-for-4 Tuesday night as the Hawks were able to overcome a 3-0 deficit going to the bottom of the fifth.
Gracyn Slaughter, Smith and Ireland also had RBIs for Triton.
Whaley and Slaughter pitched for the Hawks. Whaley had seven strikeouts in four-plus innings. Slaughter did not yield a hit.
