For the second time this season, Triton took a varsity basketball sweep over visiting rival Midway on Monday night.

Triton got off to a hot start and led the rest of the way in a 58-30 win over Midway in the girls game.

“They are really well coached,” said Midway girls coach Matthew Bagwell. “I thought they really came out ready to play. We came out flat on the defensive end of the court. That’s where I feel like we’re the strongest and I thought we were flat. We didn’t close out hard. They hit open shots and it just went down from there.”

Freshman Unique Cooke had 16 points and five rebounds, sophomore A’Shari Watlington had 12 points and senior Tristan Ennis had a double-double, with 11 points, 11 rebounds and six steals to lead the Hawks (6-0).

Abby Hood had nine points, even rebounds and eight assists. JaNiah Smith had eight points. Aubree Bass had two points.

Senior Rylie Williams led the Raiders (2-3) with 11 points.

McKenzie Williams had seven points. Kris’shyia McKoy had four points. Leah Culbreth, Morgan Williams, Morgan Hall and Taylor Hall had two points apiece.

Triton went on a 14-2 run through the first quarter. The Hawks also outscored the Raiders 16-8 in the third quarter and 14-6 in the fourth. Both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter.

When Triton and Midway’s varsity boys played at Midway, the Hawks escaped with an overtime victory. On Monday, Triton took an 80-40 rout over Midway.

“Their place, overtime game, close game,” said Triton boys coach T.J. Morrison. “This time, totally different. I wish I could tell you what was different, why we played better. But I will definitely take it. The first five or six minutes last week, I think we turned it over five or six possessions early.

“At halftime of this game, we only had two turnovers. When you can only turn it over twice, versus five, six or seven possessions in a row, it definitely makes a difference. And then pointwise, I think we gave up eight and 10. So defense was much better, taking care of the basketball was much better and overall, the effort was much better.”

All 12 players saw playing time and scored at least once for the Hawks (4-2).

“That’s great,” Morrison said. “That is rare. I’m happy for them.”

Junior Nate McKoy had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists, junior Jalen Evans had 11 points and six rebounds and junior Will Heard had 11 points to lead Triton.

Quashaun Williams had nine points. J.J. Cowan had eight points. Hayden Pope had six points and seven rebounds. James Shaw had six points and five rebounds. Sabine Wheeler had five points and six assists. Romello Pegues and Jaleel White had four points apiece. Elijah Stewart-Williams had three points. Carter Daughtry had two points.

Senior Warren Naylor had 12 points to lead the Raiders (2-3).

Trey Gregory, Jamir McCrae and Randy McMillan had five points apiece. Davis Williams had four points. Jack Hazelbeck had three points. Jaylin Baggett, Casey Culbreth and Israel Cook had two points apiece.

Triton outscored Midway 23-8 in the first quarter, 22-10 in the second, and 20-6 in the fourth. Midway outscored Triton 16-15 in the third quarter.

Triton also won the junior varsity boys game 63-53.

Triton starts All American 3-A/4-A Conference play at home against E.E. Smith on Tuesday night. Midway is at home against nonconference foe James Kenan on Wednesday night.
