Triton tops Central, 5-4, in girls tennis on Senior Day

Triton’s varsity girls tennis team narrowly edged visiting Tri-County Six 3-A Conference and Harnett County rival Harnett Central, 5-4, on Senior Day on Monday, staying unbeaten in conference play and handing the Trojans’ their first loss of the season.

The teams were dead even at 3-3 coming out of singles competition.

For the Hawks (7-1, 6-0 TCSC), senior Alexa Wise won the No. 1 singles match 8-1, freshman Madelyn Parker won a 7-5 tiebreak after an 8-8 tie in the No. 3 singles match and freshman Ansley Brown won 8-3 in the No. 5 singles match.

For the Trojans (6-1, 3-1), senior Brittany Mills won 8-2 in the No. 2 singles match, senior Anna Vreeling won 8-3 in the No. 4 singles match and senior Syniah McMiller won 8-3 in the No. 6 singles match.

Triton went 2-1 in three closely contested doubles matches to take the overall win.

Parker and sophomore Pilar Trochez won 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match and Brown and senior Caleigh Jones won 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match for the Hawks.

Mills and senior Emme Ann Thompson won 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match for the Trojans.

After the match, Triton honored three seniors: Sydney Johnson, Caleigh Jones and Alexa Wise.

Both teams have conference foe Union Pines next on their respective schedules. Harnett Central is at home against the Vikings on Thursday. Triton is out of action until after final exams and resumes play at home against Union Pines on June 7.
