Union Pines scored touchdowns on its first four possessions to take a 28-0 halftime lead at Triton on Friday night and the Vikings went on to a 42-0 nonconference win.
“We were outplayed and out-motivated,” said Hawks coach Ben Penny. “Union Pines cane out on a mission.
“That being said, we started eight freshman and sophomores tonight against a very veteran and disciplined football team.
“We have to do a better job coaching and our captains have to do a better job of leading by example. We have to be anxious to get to work this weekend and continue to grow as a football team — and fast!”
Triton has a Thursday night game at South Johnston (1-0) and taking care of the football will be a priority.
“We have to protect the football,” Penny said. “You won’t beat many teams turning it over as much as we did tonight. That’s frustrating. That was one of our top goals coming into the game — protect the football.
“Five sophomores staring on defense. Momentum swing from the start.”
The Vikings drove 53 yards in eight plays on the game’s first possession to score on a 3-yard run by senior Caleb Milton. Touchdowns followed Triton turnovers twice in the first half.
The Hawks were missing Michael Cole, a 3-year starter at center, and rush end Braden Bates, the defensive play caller, due to injuries.
