Varsity softball tunes up, middle school second in league tourney

Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity softball team had its final game Thursday before entering the NCISAA 1-A Tournament at home against Northeast Academy (9-7) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles improved to 10-7 going into the playoffs with a 23-0 win at Lee Christian. Seventh-grader Aubree Bass hit a pair of 3-run homers as she and older sister Kristen Bass each had six RBIs.

Claire Parker and Aubree Bass combined for the shutout.

Meghan Taylor was 4-for-5 as CFCA had 15 hits. Paige Jeffries drove in three runs. Natalia Brocious and Jada Horne each had two RBIs.

CFCA won the regular-season championship in the Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference, but was topped 9-8 by visiting Freedom in the league tournament championship on Wednesday.

“We had three errors that cost us five runs,” said Eagles middle school coach Craig Autry. “But our girls battled all the way.”
