Cape Fear Christian Academy officially started volleyball season on Thursday with nonconference matches against visiting St. Thomas More Academy of Raleigh.
CFCA prevailed, 2-0, in the middle school matchup after regrouping during the second set to overcome a 9-13 deficit. Ser scores were 25-17 and 25-15.
The Eagles junior varsity fell, 2-1, after winning the first set, 26-20. the Chancellors rallied with 25-20 and 15-9 scores.
The visitors prevailed, 3-1, in the varsity match with CFCA taking a 25-21 win in the third set.
The Eagles’ coaching staff includes Laina Moore with middle school. She is a former player at South Johnston. Falon Kessler is coaching junior varsity after winning the Mid-Carolina Conference with middle school in 2023.
Andrea Malthouse is directing the varsity. She is a former Campbell player who guided CFCA to a runner-up finish in the NCISAA during her first stint with the Eagles. She is being assisted by Kamie Reeves Burns, who played for Malthouse at CFCA, and Kessler.
The Eagles visit Southern Lee for JV and varsity matches today (Tuesday, August 20). The JV contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the varsity playing afterward. Mary Beth Young, who coached middle school at CFCA, is on the Cavaliers’ coaching staff.
