Wendy Simmons said Thursday she will be filling the girls basketball coaching vacancy at Triton.

Simmons, who serves as athletic director and volleyball coach for the Hawks, had been an assistant to previous girls basketball coach Keith Howard in recent seasons. Howard stepped down after last season but plans to continue working with the ROTC program at the school.

Triton was 6-19 overall and 3-7 in the Tri-County Six 3-A Conference during the 2017-18 campaign.

Howard was 90-93 overall in seven seasons with the program and had a 45-29 mark in conference games. The Hawks had three straight winning records before struggling last season.

Rising senior Anaya Lockamy and rising sophomore Anastasia McDonald are the leading returning scorers. Each averaged 5.2 points per game last season.

Simmons has been very successful as volleyball coach.

During Simmons’ tenure as volleyball coach, Triton has won numerous conference championships, including a winning streak in conference play that lasted for more than a decade.

The Hawks have seen a great deal of success in the state playoffs, including reaching the Eastern regional final four times, the most recent of which came in 2016. That trip was preceded by a run to the fourth round, making the class of 2016 one of the most decorated in school history.

Simmons is planning to continue as volleyball coach.
