Cape Fear Christian Academy won two of three games in a basketball showcase at Berean Baptist as Lathan Wilborn stepped up his offensive production.
Wilborn, a 6-feet, 6-inch sophomore, had 30 points and 15 rebounds on Thursday night in a 52-42 junior varsity win over Northwood Temple. Fisher Stancil and Eli Shwaikeh each had eight points as the junior Eagles improved to 3-1. Cade Godwin added six points.
The CFCA varsity defeated Fayetteville Christian, 66-61, on Friday as Wilborn scored 23 points.
Elijah Ellis had 14 points, Cade Godwin had 13, Conner Parrish scored nine and Kayden Dunkins added seven.
CFCA led 51-31 going into the fourth quarter but the Warriors rallied with five 3-pointers over the last eight minutes.
“Lathan had 12 in the first half,” noted Eagles coach Dwain Ellis. “We fed him the whole game and the glass with putbacks. “Ellis and Godwin stepped up in the guard role in the absence of Caden Scarborough.”
Ellis had eightrebounds and seven assists. Godwin had five assists. Dunkins contributed eightrebounds and three assists. Parrish was credited with 10 rebounds and four steals. Wilborn puked down 13 rebounds with two blocked shots.
Playing two games in two days without two starters caught up with the CFCA varsity (12-3) in a 70-59 loss to Grace Christian of Sanford on Saturday despite 16 points each from Dunkins and Wilborn.
“They gave us full court defensive pressure the whole game and we will learn from it,” Ellis said.
Conner Parrish had 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Wilborn finished with 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Godwin had eight points and four assists. Ellis had eight points and three assists. Dunkins totaled four rebounds and three assists.
CFCA begins play in the John Jacobs Memorial Tournament at Cleveland against West Johnston on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
