Lathan Wilborn’s status in the Mid-Carolina Conference junior varsity boys basketball tournament went from doubtful to decisive on Friday as Cape Fear Christian Academy downed visiting Crossroads Christian of Henderson, 51-35, for the championship.

Wilborn, a 6 feet, 6-inch sophomore, sprained a shoulder in the MCC varsity semifinals on Thursday night and dressed out after a visit to an orthopedist on Friday.

Wilborn was a dominant force with 20 points as CFCA won the MCC JV boys regular season and tournament championships for the third straight year.

The visitors had an early 5-0 lead, but the Eagles were on top, 27-14, by halftime.

Cade Godwin, another JV/varsity dual performer, had 10 points in the win. Eli Burns scored nine. Fisher Stancil scored six. Taylor Smith and Eli Shwaikeh added three points each.

Shwaikeh dropped a 3-pointer at the third quarter buzzer for a 44-21 lead.

Wilborn and Godwin were with the varsity on Thursday and were not on hand for a 63-30 win over visiting Lee Christian in the MCC tournament semifinals.

The Eagles went 11-1 for the 2024-25 season, going unbeaten against MCC opponents.
